A cistern can overflow when the inlet valve fails to stop the water supply or the float becomes stuck, damaged or incorrectly set. Water may then rise above the intended level and enter the overflow pipe. A blocked or faulty valve can also contribute. Turn off the cistern’s isolation valve if water is escaping externally, then arrange an inspection.
